W&WW: JOB INTERVIEW

The first words that come to mind when describing getting dressed for a typical job interview are professional, modest, simplistic and neat. But how do we combine all of these necessary details and still show our unique individuality? I understand interviews require a poised minimal look, however an interview not only evaluates your mind and experience, but your personality as well! Your fashion sense can be a huge representation of this, so looking like a stiff robot could actually do the opposite of help, but rather make you blend in so much you become forgettable. Let’s dress to impress so the interviewer is reminded not only of how qualified you are for the job, but how remarkable your presence was as well.

I have broken down how we can incorporate all of the typical key traits desired at an interview as well as adding our own unique flare to the mix.

  • Professional attire: The typical outfit for an interview is usually a plain jacket and pant suit that tends to be a bit boring. I completely understand looking professional during an interview, but stripping away your unique style shouldn’t be necessary. Try wearing pinstriped pants with a matching blazer, pleated trousers, a turtle neck and paired with a pea coat or even plaid pants with a solid blouse. A pencil skirt with a pattern button up shirt would exude sophistication and style as well! There’s many trendy options that will provide professionalism and personality without having to sacrifice one for the other.

  • Pop of color: Color can evoke and represent a variety of moods. When meeting an interviewer for the first time, it can be nerve wracking and awkward. Wearing a small pop of a bright color like yellow, green or blue can surprisingly break the ice by providing a welcoming, uplifting message. It will express how not only will you get the job done right, but do it with a positive attitude. Try wearing it subtly in your top under a blazer, or in the stripe detail in your pants (as I wore seen in the photos below).

  • One statement jewelry piece: Although we want to express our individuality, we don’t want it to take away from the interview and be distracting. One piece of jewelry is enough, so leave the multiple bangles, rings and necklace sets at home. I wore a classic set of hoops to show a bit of flare.

  • Minimal makeup: Similar to jewelry, less is more when it comes to makeup for interviews. A nude lip and some lush lashes is all you need! The cat eye and red lip could be a bit too distracting and could potentially give the wrong impression.

Interviews are an opportunity to put your best foot forward, not only professionally, but fashionably as well! The perfect outfit embodies confidence and poise and that’s something a potential employer will gravitate towards. I mean, who wouldn’t want that around the office?! So when it’s time to ask “Do you have any more questions?”, don’t be surprised if the answer is “where did you get your cute shoes??” :)
